In 1889, John Francis Brown made his first wines from Shiraz, Riesling and Muscat grapes in a Canadian-style barn that is still in use today as a fortified wine store!
His son, John Charles Brown took over the reins of the family vineyard in 1934 and he too was later joined by his own sons in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The willingness to experiment with different grape varieties is a family trait that was utilised as the Brown’s started exploring new grape growing regions around their vineyard in Milawa, located in the western slopes of the Australian Alps in North East Victoria.
The Brown Brothers now cultivate the largest selection of grape varieties as they continue their experimentation with varietals that are not usually seen in Australia such as Malbec, Tempranillo, Pinot Meunier, Dolcetto, Chenin Blanc, Moscato…!
The Patricia collection of wines is named after the beloved matriarch of the family and only the best fruit is hand selected from their best vineyards to craft these wines.
BROWN BROTHERS PATRICIA CHARDONNAY 2010, NORTH EASTERN VICTORIA, YARRA VALLEY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
The cool climate of the Yarra Valley contributes more mineral than fruit, and this 2010 Patricia Chardonnay shows it with finesse and elegance!
In the glass, it is a light silvery yellow with greenish hues.
On the nose, it is a little subdued but as it warms up, there are aromas of lemon zest, a little butter, wet stone and toasted nuts.
On the palate, it is zesty, dry with white peaches, lemon and minerals. It has a bright and lovely acidity that would make this the perfect wine to accompany soft stinky cheeses, a rich Caesar salad or even parmesan chicken linguini!
BROWN BROTHERS PATRICIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009, KING VALLEY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
The fruit for this 2009 Patricia Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from different outstanding vineyards in cool climate Victoria and is indeed an outstanding giant!
In the glass, it is a dense, deep, dark ruby red, almost opaque in the center with voluminous legs.
It is a little shy on the nose but as it breathes, it reveals complexity and aromas of cherries, a little almond and a touch of cedar.
On the palate, it is elegant and rich. Dry with a good tannic backbone, refreshing acidity, ripe cherries and the finest vanilla! The finish is long and a little smoky.
This wine is like a gentle giant at the moment but will transform into a superhero in a few years!
