COMTES DE ROCQUEFEUIL 2013, MONTPEYROUX COTEAUX DU LANGUEDOC AOC FRANCE
SAQ PRICE: $13,45
Montpeyroux is a small village in the south of France. It is part of the Hérault department and is part of the Coteaux du Languedoc AOC in the Languedoc-Roussillion wine region. Founded in 1950, Montpeyroux's Cave Co-operative has over 130 cultivar members and was one of the last to be formed in the Languedoc. Its terroir is considered to be one of the region's greats. Montpeyroux means in the local Occitan language "stony mountain" because the vineyards are surrounded by them!
The co-op has been re-named CastelBarry to illustrate its deep historical roots as it lies halfway between an 11th century castle named The Castellas and the Chapel of Saint-Martin Barry.
This wine is a blend of 50% Carignan, 25% Syrah and 25% Cinsault. The vines are an average of 35 years of age.
In the glass, it is a bright, deep cherry red with languorous legs.
On the nose, it is intense and inviting with aromas of cherries, a little meat, lilac and almond extract.
It is dry on the palate with a beautiful balance between tannins and acidity. Full of candied cherries, cassis with a little spice and earth. The finish is long and keeps capturing those cherries!
This is one of my go-to wines... Best analogy for it: It is like that "special friend" that you keep going back to and every time you do, you wonder why you left in the first place...!
Spectacular on its own but amazing with pan-fried duck breast served with braised wine infused red cabbage and rosemary roasted potatoes...
