Jean-Jacques Koch, acquired the Scharzhof estate from the “République Française” in 1797 after the French Revolution and the occupation of the West Bank of the Rhine River in Germany by the revolutionary government. He laid the foundation on which the estate currently stands today.
After his death, the property was divided among his children. Elizabeth, one of his daughters, married Felix Muller and together, through inheritance and further purchases, were able to more or less double the size of the property by 1850.
But, it was their son, Egon Muller who was instrumental in creating the Scharzhof estate’s reputation via his very successful attendances at world exhibitions. In fact, Egon Muller-Scharzhof has become the leader in producing the finest German wines.
Not just any German wines though, all of the family’s wines are Rieslings. And what Rieslings they are!
So, let’s decipher this label! “Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 1994 Egon Muller”
This is a 1994 Riesling produced by Egon Muller.
Scharzhofberger is the name of the vineyard from which the grapes were sourced from. A vineyard that was likely planted by the Romans and belonged to the Monastery “St Marien ad Martyres” in Trier from its founding around 700 A. D. through the Middle Ages.
The term Kabinett is used by this producer to guarantee that the wine is made from ripe grapes as opposed to being chaptalized (adding sugar to the must). So you can expect some lovely sweetness!
The color in the glass is a very bright, light yellow with greenish hues.
On the nose, because of the older vintage, it evolved constantly as it breathed. Started out a little shy but aromas of dried apricot, peaches, lime, almond extract and a bit of herbalness, maybe green vegetation sprung up.
On the palate, it is ample and delicious. There is a Del Monte’s fruit salad quality to it. As expected, there is some residual sugar but also a bracing acidity that keeps this wine balanced. The texture is sensuous and coats the mouth wonderfully . It is definitely a wine to savor!
Find the biggest juiciest and freshest scallops and sauté very simply to accompany it. Or a spicy red Thai seafood curry with loads of jasmine rice!
