It was out of necessity to provide for his family that Pol Roger made his first wine sale in 1849 to a merchant in his native Ay in the Champagne region of France, because his father, a notary, had contracted an incurable disease and couldn't carry on his practice.
In just 30 years, the brand had amassed an enviable amount of recognition, and Pol Roger's sons took over the family business after his passing in 1899. To this day it is still owned and operated by the fifth generation of Pol Rogers.
This special cuvée was created in 1975 and is an homage to the great Winston Churchill.
Churchill first tasted Pol Roger's 1928 Champagne towards the end of the Second World War at a dinner where he also met Mme Odette Pol Roger. He became a close family friend and a big fan of their wine. It is said that he would order their 1928 Vintage by the case!
The Winston Churchill cuvée is crafted according to the qualities the man himself enjoyed in a Champagne: robustness, a full body and some maturity.
The exact blend is a family secret containing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced exclusively from Grands Crus vineyards which were already under vine while Mr. Churchill was alive.
This cuvée is only produced in exceptional vintage years and is always released later than other Pol Roger dated Champagnes, marking Mr. Churchill's appreciation for older wines.
In the glass, it is a bright straw yellow color with a multitude of dazzling minuscule bubbles.
On the nose, there is a little caramel, ripe pear and some toasted Panettone aromas.
On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied, zesty and dry. The bubbles, like the softest mousse, envelop your tongue and tickle the inside of your mouth. There is some caramel and citrus but also some light colored fruit-cake notes.
It is SUBLIME and I would rate it extremely high in terms of addiction potential, budget allowing!
To savour on its own or on special occasions with the best foie gras or pâtés and warm brioche bread or special creamy garlicky truffle pasta dishes.
